Science Project -Blog Entry 7

These are 3 pictures I took during my experiment.
Picture 1 : Shows plastics in the drink and pH paper.
Picture 2 : Shows drinks.
Picture 3 : Shows results of the pH paper.

Here is a table of my results

The trends and patterns found in my experiment were that juices are more acidic than soft drinks. A drink such as solo which has traces of lemon (5%) has shown to be still acidic with a pH of 3. The findings also show that the high pH drinks (lemonade, solo, orange juice highly affected the bone compared to the other drinks (fanta, coke,) which did not affect it as much. These drinks also had a pH of 4-5. Basically this means that the drinks with lower ph (acidic) can break down more of the bone than higher ph drinks.

The errors and weaknesses I made in the experiment were that I used a thick bone that did not show a great effect on coke or fanta. Another weakness that affected the test was using a pH paper with a smaller scale than usual.

If I repeated this experiment another time I would choose to improve the experiment by changing the material to something more thin and weak because the bone I used was far too strong giving small results and I should have left the experiment for more than twelve hours and changed it to 24+ hours. I would’ve also used a different pH paper which went from 1-14pH.

I believe my experiment was very reliable because after repeating the experiment I obtained the same results. Validity was proven by keeping the dependant variable the same throughout the experiment. But I should have used a different pH paper, one that would show answers from 1-14pH because some of the drinks could’ve been either higher or lower and this is why I believe the accuracy of the experiment wasn’t 100%. But the results did show a pH that matched the scale so I believe it was still correct (if it didn’t it would have showed a different or no color at all).

From the results our findings indicate that Lemonade and Solo had the lowest pH reading of 3 thus making it the most acidic and Fanta had the highest pH reading of 5, making it the most neutral.
The results also show that Orange juice and lemonade were the most effective on the bone and famta was the least effective on the bone.
After being in the drinks for 12hours, Lemonade had reduced its bone in size by 1cm.The other drinks reduced the bone by:
Coke - 0.5cm
Solo - 0.6cm
Fanta - 0.4cm
Orange Juice 0.6cm
After looking at the bone i saw a change in color from the bones.
Coke - Became Dark brown
Solo - Decayed and became brown
Fanta - Became orange
Orange Juice - Became orange and yellow
Lemonade - Became light yellow (mostly white still)

My experiment matched the hypothesis because Lemonade had the strongest acidity and was one of the strongest in breaking down the bone. I believe the results were like this is because a lemon actually has 138 mg (3%) per 100g of phosphoric acid in the fruit. This is a lot more than coke. Though solo was also equal with the lemonade but did not affect the bone.
